Some Albums Listen to You

This post is a response to a writing prompt from Underline Center: "Write about an album that got you through a hard time."

It would be an injustice to pick just one album! Hard times have a tendency to move in and stay for a good chunk of your life. And the kind of comfort, encouragement, or soothing I need keeps shifting, ranging like those high-low sonic beats: some days I need agony screaming, some days I need silence with a melody hidden inside it.

But if I had to choose: Linkin Park's Meteora.

I was looking for something that understood. Chester's voice did that. He could scream what I couldn't say out loud, and somehow that made the weight easier to carry. "Numb," "Breaking the Habit," "Somewhere I Belong" these songs were proof that someone else had been in the same room I was stuck in, and had left the light on.

Eminem taught me something adjacent: that anger, sharpened into words, becomes fuel instead of poison. Porcupine Tree taught me the opposite lesson that sometimes you don't fight the heaviness, you sit inside it until it dissolves. The most excruciatingly painful place to be.

But Meteora was the one that got me through the album that never asked me to explain myself.

Some albums you listen to. Some albums listen to you.

What's yours?
